Time is money I think all truckers should get wait time after two hours I charge $60 a hour and that's cheap I think but had a Landstar agent a few weeks back said I was nuts he has never seen that much paid out, but they have a lot of new brokers that are not worth a Chet I did a dedicated run with one of my trucks last year started it in aug when freight was hot was a 300 mile run was getting $1,000 at first than they dropped it to 3 runs a week but still wanted me there at 7am I said no problem exept on Monday that I would have a load on me to drop first thing they said no 7am Monday Wednesday and Friday than said the customer said they would have to drop the pay than I get that call wanting to pay me $650 a run I said no way! they said they could even get it done cheaper in July they called back wanting me to do it again would still pay $1,000 a run I said no thanks!!!
Well. I was working with an LTL carrier. They just became too demanding and the money was not there. They began to think they owned the ship. Guess it was just time to take back the wheel. As many of you have said already sometimes it's just time to move on. Pending as if all debts are paid I will then release the name of the carrier. I have a funny feeling as though the pay will be quite short.
I had an old timer tell me one time that the three worst businesses to be in are Farming,Shrimping, and Trucking. The farmer bust his ### to bring in a good crop to survive and when he gets it all in he has to ask how much the big guys will pay him for it? The Shrimper battles the elements and cost of fuel just like the Farmer. Brings in a haul to the docks and asks how much can I get for load? The trucker approaches cust or broker and asks how much will you pay? Are we not our own business? How did it get like this? A mech dosent work on our equipment and when hes done ask how much will you pay me? Untill we can change this mindset we will always be at a disadvantage to the big guys! Just Say,n
I don't follow you. I don't agree to haul a load before I know what the rate is. The problem is that when I quote a reasonable rate, some schmuck will come in behind me with his truck and offer to do it for 1/2 what I quoted. And he can keep doing that until his truck wears out and he discovers that he can't afford to replace it and get it fixed. By that time, someone else has just gotten into the business and is willing to work for free, and the cycle repeats.
I tell brokers flat out " this is how much I'll do it for"... I get my price, or I find someone else who will give me my price.
With an exception: A farmer plants and grows, if a drought, a bug or a storm wipe him out, he still gets paid. Sometimes he gets paid not to plant. I have never been paid not to truck and never got paid if I broke down. Need crop insurance for trucks......
There is also plenty of other shippers/customers to haul for.... It works both ways unless you are horrible at business and just put all your money into having one customer.
