HAM Radio Antenna Options?

You don't need a tuner with a screwdriver antenna. The antenna itself can be remotely tuned.

The typical 100W HF rig does ~20W on AM. The typical CB, after the "golden screwdriver" treatment, does more than that. You'll have to be careful, though, as your signal will sound a LOT better than theirs... :)

Ahhh yes, understood. I haven't seen much in the way of mods for the 7100 yet either... It looks like a real nice rig though. I used to love to do field day, and other events so I opted for the 7000. Being a self contained unit, its a little easier to take with me if I need to go. I never understood having a radio where attaching the face to the transmitter was not an option. That said for a radio that will be more permanently mounted that's not a problem.

I took my technician test in December and barely passed it, took the general 5 minutes later and passed it with little trouble I wanted to take the extra but it was getting late So I took it a month later. I was a Technician license holder back when they dropped the code requirement (for tech only) but let my license expire back in 2001. If it helps any, theres a really good guide out there which helped me study. they can be found here: http://www.kb6nu.com/tech-manual/ Basically the author took all of the questions word-for-word and uses them in context making it an easy read that you can actually learn some of the theory from. For me it was better than the ones that have you memorize the questions.

In any event if there is any thing I can answer let me know.

Appreciate the information and the help offer. I added you as a friend or at least I thought I did. It's not showing up for some reason. I'm still trying to figure out how to navigate this forum. lol

I plan on building a box that the radio equipment will be mounted in so it will be easy to take out of the truck during time off. So everything will be permanently mounted but at the same time have mobility. It'll be a pain in the bum to have to pull that screw type antenna off every time, but at 400 dollars a pop, I'll suck it up and just do it. haha
If you ever run across the 11m mod for the 7100 don't hesitate to send it my way :)

The screwdriver is a remotely tuned antenna. There are controllers that will tune the antenna with one button push. It takes a few seconds to retune the antenna, but that's all.

A good site to read is k0bg.com.
