It's his preference. If that's how he wants to haul it's up to him. We don't go to walmart demanding they put a churches chicken in and sell Gucci belts. Now yes he's under your authority I assume, and if he has YOUR trailer then the fault belongs to YOU for not disclosing the stipulations of how your business model works ON CONTRACT.
I agree $2.19 per mile for 550 miles is way too cheap. that 550 mile load with loading and unloading will probably tie the truck up for at least 1 1/2 days. Also, How many deadhead miles? Is that 550 miles ACTUAL or 'BOOK' miles? We all know how 550 miles can easily be 600 plus actual miles !!!!!
well I all I could do was tell him how I operate and give him averages based on what other owner operators are making with my company. this is a learning curve for me too as far as hiring drivers and owner operators. I was a driver myself so I know what it takes to make it as an owner operator. I offer my experience but everyone seems to know better then me. they are also under the impression that all loads in all areas should make a certain amount instead of looking at the bigger picture like hauling something for $1.50 a mile in order to get a load on the other end paying $3.00-$4.00 a mile all they see is the money there not making on that 1 load. I stay to my word with me you wont sit however if your going to say you wont haul anything over 30,000 lbs your just screwing yourself out of the better paying loads. Ive seen how shippers react to the lighter loads unless its a much needed commodity or there just desperate they know that they are cheaper to run and they try to push them out at cheaper rates. so you haven't really gained anything. sure i have haul 10,000 loads for a really good rate but those are few and far between I don't count on getting those. Although as an owner operator you have the right to pick and choose your own loads a line has to be drawn somewhere im not going to want to pay $700 a month in insurance for a truck that sits cause he doesn't have the head for business.
no your assuming i run like every other carrier loading and unloading wont tie truck up trucks usually unloaded in 30 min to 2 hours max what you don't know is that ill have him booked on another load he will head to his next pickup straight from the receiver my trucks never sit sure you can wait for a better load to come around and lose the whole day and still may not get anything better or you can take that load and and make money it may sound like a cheap load to some but if you run those for the entire week you just netted over $3000 after expenses for the week. like I said there only focused on that 1 load not the bigger picture. same with company drivers there focus is on how much per mile they get paid 30 cents a mile with 3000 miles a week is still better then 50 cents a mile with 1500 miles a week.
OP, how long have you had authority? How many trucks do you have under your authority? How many dispatchers?
I am an owner operator and I do not haul ANY load that is 40k or over....My loads are 35 k or less because heavy loads are to hard on the truck. Why would you take a heavy load when the brokers do not pay anymore for a heavy load then they do for a light load??... A thousand mile load is a thousand mile load and you have your per mile rate that you need to do it.... So why would you haul a heavy load and burn more fuel pulling it and put that wear and tear on your truck?
