Rode it twice in March of 2006. Since it was only 50 dergrees outside there were just four of us on the road there which made it very nice to ride. I might go back sometime to ride it again, or not.
has anyone been this way before?

deals gap is "US 129", its a US hwy, therefore it can not be truck restricted, the idea has been thrown out there more than you can imagine, but the road receives federal money, so it can not be restricted... i've been up there MANY times on my bike, its where i take my vacation, and there are signs up LOOOONG before the point of no return advising trucks of what they are getting into...
-
That would be a real long 46 miles.I would'nt wanna drive it.
-
Riding on that mountain with your bike, what's that like?
-
It's like a motorcycle race track in the mountains... Deals Gap is only an 11 mile section of US129, and it has 318 curves in that 11 miles. The roads on either side are just as curvy and fun.
Deals Gap is a "motorcycle resort" of sorts. Whenever the weather is nice, the roads are loaded with motorcycles, and with trucks in the mix, its very dangerous through there.
That sign says 15-20 mph curves for 46 miles, well thats for cars. Deals Gap has 318 turns, 11 miles...
Constant switchbacks and hairpin turns, blind curves everywhere, a mountain on one side, and drop off on the other. the camber of the road will change with the elevation too, to prepare you for the next curve.
It is IMPOSSIBLE to drive a truck through there and stay in your lane, you will ALWAYS have part of your truck in the oncoming lane, and is extremely dangerous, because nobody coming around that blind curve you are approaching knows you are there.
While some friends are planning vacations to the beach, I am planning vacation to Deals Gap.

With twist and turns that sharp,is'nt their a length restriction? If not there should be.Theres alot of curves to deal with for only 11 miles of Deals Gap.Where exactly is Deals Gap?Guess I could check out their website.I imagine awhole lot of bikes go there like Sturgis. That's a nice bike you have.

Whether or not a road receives Federal Funding has nothing to do with restrictions that are placed by either the state or local laws/ordinances. I wish that was the case, but it is not. If you don't believe me, take a 53 footer down US 15 in northern VA, or take any truck on US 17 above I-66. I wish the restrictions against trucks would remove Federal funding.
And you do NOT want to take a big rig on the dragon, Google it or look on youTube.48Packard Thanks this. -
Do not drive a truck through there. I used to live near there. Law enforcement really frowns upon it. If I can find a vid of a Swifty driving it, I'll post it...I know it's somewhere here on TTR.
And I'm not sure where you got the notion that since it is a US Highway, it can not be truck restricted. There are restricted US highways all over the US. Virginia comes to mind in the area of Big Island.
Here is one:
