I only throw out there about it being a federal road, and can not be restricted, because that is what the local news in that area says. The local officials have TRIED to restrict that route from trucks, but have been unsuccessful, and were told it was because it was a US route. Last time I read up on it, its been a while, but they were trying to have all that land basically annexed into one of the nearby national parks, which they then could restrict truck traffic.
-
2012 Motor Carrier Atlas lists it as a restricted route.
-
2008 atlas also lists US 129 as a restricted route in TN.
-
Obviously it is never enforced though.
-
I'm sure if a driver gets stuck in a ditch along that route, there will be lots of enforcement/fines.
-
They never do crap till it is too late.

I have rode it on a cruiser...318 curves in 11 miles....Fun Fun Fun....They have a web site if you want to look at some pics. Just type in Tail of the Dragon...It will come up...

Looks like fun,,, for my 4 wheel roller skate (see sig pic)
Still, although you'd have to be desperate or an idiot to take that road, I find that website to be a little,,, elitist? A lot of those "accidents" look like they could have been avoided if the 4 & 2 wheelers would back up and let the truck though the curve. -
In early Feb.2010, I drove through the mountains of Cost Rica.
They have the same trucks as we do. The roads had few guard rails.
Severe mountain drop offs. I was amazed at how the driving was. People passing each other on straight aways and even some curves. NO ACCIDENTS.
The reason, as I saw it. The other drivers moved over so you could safely make it by. Here in American, we as drivers DEMAND our share of the road.
We get irritated if some one tries to take "our" space. So we dont slow down or move over...
No matter what we are driving we try to bully other drivers, it is our nature.sadly.
