I hauled milk for years, out of dairies and into plants, once you get the milk down pat it was a very easy job. Pay not great, home most nights but running hard. For me the whole surge thing was overstated, I never had an issue with it, you quickly get used to it. I hated the flies and heat, I worked in Death Valley CA. Based on my experience I would probably not haul milk again unless the yard was close to where I live and it was a decent company. I am going to try chemicals to see if I can make more money.

I forgot to mention the reason I came to hauling milk in the first place..the 5 on 2 off 5 on 3 off schedule which is customary in milk hauling, since you don't get weekends and holidays off. I really looked forward to that three day every other week. Of course if you wanted to work there was usually plenty to go around.

I hauled chem & some milk hauling. Basically the same lines of hauling. If it pays above avg or pretty close its an easy job. Now if guys want to run illegal it's an option of screwing your commercial drivers lic. All I can say work like a professional and keep being a decent person& do the job right the work and $$$$ will be good.

Go to Indian Rivers forum. I hauled Propane and Ammonia on a shotgun. It was interesting work. Haul milk and you'll have a job when the oilfield crash comes next year.

If you do haul milk theres work even when you dont want it or feel like it. Its like any other job its what you make it and if you got a good attitude about the work its enjoyable. Yeah I have slept alot in that secure NC yard waiting to get to the bottom of the hill. Wait time varies. All in a days work. One thing about it even if you dont make the most money you hold onto it because you dont have time to go spend it. You get in a rythm and its a good job. You know you gotta get gone and you just adjust to the routine. People gripe and grumble and keep right on hauling. You wont forget the experience and meet some super nice folks. Listen to what the old hands tell you and be respectful. Almost any milk hauler is proud to help new people learn the ropes and go out of their way to do so. Give it a try and see if I am not telling you the straight of it . You have nothing to lose.

I'm looking to buy a tractor and lease a tanker is there enough money that someone would be able to do it. I have a buddy that wants to run 3 days on 3 days off rotation. Can I survive if we start out 7 days a week

I've been out here almost two years out of school now and make 41 cpm driving flat deck and pneumatic, and 46 cpm running B-trains (when not working hourly, in CDN$). If you are desperate for the experience, sure, go for it, but that's seems like it doesn't pay very much.
