Hauling pipe

    PVC pipe or metal pipe?

    I've done 2" PVC load on my step that was loaded 13'6 tall front to back. Whole load didnt weight more than 25k.

    Metal pipe,.. that would be heavy.

    Dont they usually bundle pipe that small?
    Smallest diameter I've ever done unbundled was 4" oil field pipe.

    As for the pipe stake,.. I made my own out of C Channel. I cut mine at 48" and then welded a single plate poking out of the channel to hold it into the pocket. Was quick and easy to do,.. and I suck at welding and fab work.

    It is steel oilfield pipe. I just called the yard that has it and they said it is 4.70 lbs per foot and the lengths range from 29-33' He said most trucks load out with 320 joints.

    If I went with a 31' average that is 145.7 lbs each or 46,624 for the 320. My truck is 32,040 empty so that should be doable.

    The only thing throwing me off is the 32' length. Usually they are in 10', 15', and 20' lengths. I've never done or seen 32'. Not saying it doesnt exist. But I would verify the length.

    Standard on a drilling rig is 30 foot joints. When they trip out of the hole they pulled em up 3 at a time and call it a stand, 90 feet

    If it's that light it must be tubing instead of drill pipe.

    I didnt know that,.. and I've done drill rig pipe from Tex to ND. I never bothered measuring because they fit on the deck fine.

    True,.. he did say it was for a friend. So anything is possible.

    Could be for a kelly well or similar.

    Since you've got the weight figured, the next step will be how to load. And that will depend on how it's getting unloaded. I haul a lot of coated pipe, and we typically do strip loads (dunnage between every layer) so it can be loaded and unloaded from the side using forks easier. However, if the unloading is going to be done by crane, you can also go with a pyramid stack.

    Either way you choose to load, I highly recommend using 2 inch straps to gut wrap the entire load front and back. It helps tie the whole load together and helps in a small way to prevent the middle of the load from shifting under moderate braking. Like I said, I haul a lot of pipe. And I gut strap every load before I start chucking straps over top or tighten the belly wrap straps. Once the gut straps are tightened down, everything else tightens down real nice and tight.

    I will be unloading at the destination with a backhoe with pallet forks. This is used pipe and is going to be used for building pipe fence. No real worries about damage to it just want to make sure it makes the trip safely. The pipe yard can't load until after the first so that gives me some time to get the pipe stakes together.

    I have 12 winches and 4" straps on my trailer and 12 chains and binders. I will definitely gut wrap and go overkill on straps and chains.
