Correct. Straps dont do nothing for a suicide coil.

If you have a regular flatbed then nothing can really be thrown over the top of the coil that will do any good for load securement. But if you have a Reitinouer or something similar you can use the center tie down tracks to throw chains and binders over the top or a couple of ratchet straps.

ok, well I pulled a load so I thought I would let ya all know whats going on.

The truck was already loaded when I got in it, so I did not have that experience, but basically they loaded it with the eye to the front/rear with two chains pulling towards each side, with one chain pulled back towards itself, and one chain out a little further
So that would make 4 chains per coil, each coil weighing 38-50k lbs

I drew up a quick sketch of how they are loaded. Anyone have a better way? Suicide is not really a favorite option of the employer either.

Obviously, each chain goes through the eye.

oh, and might as well throw up a pic of the rig. Lead only in this one.

You got it! I personally like to keep my chains as close to the coil as possible as long as they ain't to close to one another.

You'll get the hang of it.

Nice outfit, except for the singles...lol

No you dont but it doesnt hurt either I have always loaded suicide because the coil is setting on both trailer frame rails not inbetween them so it rides alot better also i use to put 4 chains pulling to rear of trailer and 3 to the front chained down as close as you can get them then i put 1 right in the middle pulling straight down to the trailer then 2 4inch straps across top ...If you chain down this way it isnt moving off the trailer

Thats overkill and a waste of time :biggrin_2559:
    5) Chains and a 3) board bulk head is all you need to run a 48K coil
Suicide is the only way to load a coil(s)
    6) Chains a Rag and your rolling . . . . . .

I know it is overkill but i didnt want a coil to get loose and i never had one to move or a claim

I never look at over securing as over kill. I look at it as keeping someone from getting killed.

I'm constantly amazed at how sloppy alot of steel haulers secure their loads but I will say I seldom see a coil hauler dicking around.
