Well Jason Do they give me time to eat yeah they do and they don't I can eat on my ten hour break. I seldom stop for lunch because they schedule me so tight right now there just isn't time. The thing we forget about is that there are so many variables.
Say they give me a three hour run somewhere and I have four hours to do it. Now in the three hours I am going to have to use the bathroom, check my load, stretch my legs, check my map,Check the qualcomm and find directions, write in the log book, get stuck in traffic or in my case get stuck behind a slow moving truck that I cant pass.
All these little extra things add up and they eat into that extra hour that you thought you had that you really don't.So you can see if you don't have good time management skills you are screwed and I am starting to learn some of those skills but I still make mistakes
I am slower then most in securing and tarping my loads so right now that is what little extra time I have is going.I am sure maverick wants me to pick up the pace because if the wheels ain't turning they ain't making any money and neither am I.
Morris I have often wonder how a suit could run a company if he had never driven good for him.I think I said it before and I will say it again dispatchers are glorified pimps.![]()
Have to start somewhere

"glorified pimps" ha ha
That is a description I haven't heard before but can see the similarity. I remember when I drove back in the 80's and I was in my mid 20's. The dispatcher I had was always rushing me and kind of made me nervous which is not a good thing for a truck driver. Today I would not feel the same way so I would be more comfortable with it although I still would not appreciate it much. Seems people with authority will treat the best employees more harshly because the good employees actually care about doing a good job. The crappy employees actually get treated better because the people in authority are somewhat thankful they get any work out of them. Doesn't make sense to me but common sense is hard to find nowdays! -
U ever get around Louisville Kentucky? I was at a Flying J today and seen a Maverick truck parked there while I was getting gas and thought about you.
-
Yes I was in Louisville last Thursday.I am headed to Seurgon Tenn with a load of greybar right now that is due by 11 am Wednesday.I was suppose to go to Oklahoma but they wouldn't allow my kind of trailer at the shipper so I got this load good for me it is more miles. The weather is kind of crappy right now hoping for spring time to come soon post more later stay dry.

I appreciate your steady posting through these months. I am a new driver, graduated last friday. I've been talking to TMC. I have about decided to start orientation next monday in Columbia SC. I will try to be as dutiful about posting as you have been.

Now that you have your own truck, where do you keep it on the weekends when you are home? do they let you take it home?
-
Daytona - You raised an interesting point a few posts back when you wrote about getting called in the middle of the night by your dispatcher. Since your middle of the night and the rest of the world's may be different based on your local conditions, shipper/receiver schedule, etc, how do you keep from getting constantly interrupted during sleep time? Is it kosher to shut the phone off during your sleep time, or are you expected to be available to the rest of the world 24/7?
-
I am in New Orleans waiting to drop this in the morning.I park my truck in the maverick yard since it is only ten minutes from my house but most fellows park at a truckstop when they are off duty.I am living in the truck 24/7 when I am not at home.So I guess I am never out of there reach.I can shut my phone off .I dont know how to shut the qualcomm off.It has only gone off in the middle of the night once. The goverment and I got my six month bonus check today. They took a healthy bite.I have put 45k on the truck in six months. yeah me

Hey Daytona! Great posts. Have really enjoyed reading about your adventures. I am 54 and begin school in May. Your postings have really given me an idea of what I can expect. Thank you.
What brand of laptop do you use? Do you have a printer, too? Are you using a logbook program on the computer? -
hi daytona,
i can't tell you how helpful you have been to the newbies(read me). i just got my final approval for school paid for by a state program on 3-17. i could not have afforded this on my own so i am truly grateful for this opportunity and reading your posts helps me to go in this profession with eyes wide open and understanding the good and bad aspects of this business.
i just talked to a gal that has been with u.s. express that came to my place of business. she had some good insight also having only been driving for a month.
are things going a little smoother for you now? have you learned how to deal with the "glorified pimps" a little better? any tips would be helpful.
thanx again, apaknad
