If you're having trouble shifting with a clutch do not go to floating. Floating does not make a truck driver. However, floating can be done when you know the truck and how to shift. I'm sure I'll get plenty of "float all you want when you're alone" but that's not how it's done in my book, if that counts. I believe you should know the truck and take care of the equipment so the equipment takes care of you.
When you make the shift apply power after you go into gear. Forget the way you drive a car. A truck has way too much torque to apply while going into gear. That's a good way to twist your driveshaft off. Just relax and make a smooth shift, do not hurry the shift. You'll get it.
