I emailed several recruiters from different companies and have never had an email answered.

I checked my email and received a reply from Central Refrigerated and it's not good news for my situation. Here is the reply:

unfortunately it would. due to the insurance that we use we require that you have at least 12 months in the past three years of work history.

So basically moving overseas and taking a few years off from the rat race has caused major harm in my employability. Now I'm starting to remember why I moved over here in the first place. Too many regulations on just about everything a person does or wants to do. There isn't any real freedom remaining in anything back there I guess. Peoples lives are regulated to the extreme, but incrementally people will put up with anything.

Of course, this is just one company, but its the one I really wanted to start with. I've always believed there is a job for a man who wants to work and has a "can do, make it happen" attitude. I'm not giving up on it.

I'm not positive on this but I thought I read somewhere on this forum about a guy who said he was unemployed for 3 years, he then went through a CDL school and then got on with Watkins/Shepperd out of Montana. You would have to pay out of pocket for a refresher course but you can call them to find out if you would qualify seeing as you have no recent work history and kind of the same situation.

Stay in the Philippines (a guess) and enjoy your retirement. I would never be bored there!! Otherwise look into a small outfit, they have way different hiring standards.

That's what I thought too, but here I am planning for an exit after only 2.5 years. I have a lot of productive years ahead, if i want them, at the age of 43. I can't believe that this is the end of the road for me. There are good things about being here, but there is no place in the world like the USA.

For what it's worth, I think you may regret that. I think the U.S. has finally turned the corner, for the worse. I think it'll only get worse in the long run now.

Is it just a lack of economic opportunity over there that's a problem?

Most people who are qualified and able leave this country in search of work do it. Most people over here work for about $5 to $10 a day and I call it subsistence living, not much left over after food and rent. I have enough money for now, but at some point I will need to come back. The longer I wait the more difficult it will be, besides like I said, I'm bored and trucking is somethng I've always had in the back of my mind. That's why I got a CDL over ten years ago and never used it. It's time to use it now.

Not to dissuade your efforts, if I could get food + rent + fuel - let alone having anything remaining - that would be an improvement

Unemployment in Midland in May stood at just 3.8 percent

Try a small outfit as others have mentioned. Similar to you I am semi-retired, drove three months for a local company couple years ago. When I left they said come back anytime. going to do that next week for another three months, more for something to do than anything else. Not going to get the newest truck in the fleet, and won't make the $ that the regular drivers do. As long as I turn the truck in undamaged and make all my appointments there is no problem.

I think you will be able to find a job in trucking eventually. I was in a very similar situation and can relate. I worked overseas and saved up a lot of money so I didn't need to work for quite a few years (in which I did various non-paying pursuits). I am not ashamed of what I did and would definitely do it again, but yes it seems like they all treat me suspiciously - as though I'm hiding a stint in prison or was a secret drug abuser. Like others have mentioned, what they do is have you submit all kinds of verifying paperwork. I even had to have friends submit notarized statements that I was unemployed. What is so frustrating, is they make you jump through a bunch of hoops because of employment gaps, yet if someone was a truly nefarious character they would be able to fabricate most of the stuff anyways. You basically just have to bite your tongue, swallow your pride and do the tap dancing they want since they (the employers) hold the keys.
