Yesterday I almost got bitten by the 8800 lb and ID placards rule.
The cover sheets that come wit our bills has a hazmat summary at the top with what placards you need. Problem is, most guys don't understand that this is only a suggestion. You should never trust someone else to tell you how to drive your truck.
Now, mine said regular "corrosive" only, and I can pretty much guarantee that few if any drivers I've ever met would've thought about needing ID placards once the second to last delivery comes off, since my last stop was 11K lbs of batteries.
The moral of the story is.... plan ahead guys.

As soon as I started reading your post I immediately thought of car batteries. One of our terminals picks up full trailers from Interstate Batteries, and I noticed their linehaul drivers don’t seem to notice or care that they need the UN number if there’s nothing else on the trailer.

there's a spot called evonik we pick up at and this hazmat is CORROSIVE + TOXIC but when gets into the terminal and goes out for a local delivery the DR says corrosive only......so now with all hazmat loads i always ask for the original BOL so i can see what i have, i do i when i cant see the hazmat also i make the Dock supervisor sign on the manifest shipper load and count since i dont know if the Hazmat is properly secure ....
i always get suck with all the hazmat SNIT kinda sucksalds Thanks this. -
when you pick up those UN 2794 make sure they have the placards first cause we have an account where we pick and they don't have the placards

You’re talking about subsidiary risk. Only the main risk category counts for placards, unless it’s uranium hexaflouride, and for that you need radioactive plus corrosive IIRC.Jay5GS Thanks this.
