This is a little weird. My wife got her Hazmat in less than 48 hours.

Tuesday; 11 am appointment to take test.and a 4 pm appointment for finger prints.

Wednesday; 9 am got text she was cleared.

Thursday; 10:30 am appointment at DMV to get a paper copy of New license with endorsements while she waits for the plastic one in the mail.

At the DMV they said nope it'll take 10 weeks you need to wait till then. Wife told them she was told to come in as soon as she got the confirmation and politely requested they double check. A supervisor looked it up and sure enough it was there.
Only thing that we can think of is she worked for the airport before. She hasn't had her Hazmat before.

It just depends on the workload they have. I've had it take a couple months and I've had it take four days. I've watched many a driver put themselves out of work for some time because they waited until the last minute. The best part is when you do your TWIC and HazMat at the same time, send it to the same place and you get them weeks apart. In '18 they made some exemptions for states to give you HazMat if you had gotten your TWIC recently but I have no idea how much that has been implemented across states.

I got mine rather fast, and was told that it might come back faster if you're already in the system...like if you've already got a passport or twic or precheck

I got mine in like a week. Now my TWIC took 30 days.

My wife used to work at the Denver Airport, background check every year, usually had results overnight, she's been off for two years, starts back this week, when she went for her new background check and fingerprints it took 9 days. My HAZMAT and TWIC renewal are in January, I simply cannot wait.

I had a high level security clearance years ago. So, there's already a substantial FBI file on me. Unsure if it would speed things up for a haz mat background check. But, I've bought a couple of guns and when they called in to verify the stuff they have to, it would instantly get approved. Unsure if that's normal or not, but the folks calling it in always seemed surprised it was approved so quickly. It is entirely possible your wife's airport work had her in the system and why it was approved so quickly.
I'd like to get my haz mat. It is the only thing I'm missing from having a full license. So, maybe one day I'll find out if I get a quick turnaround.
