And a lot of times, HazMat needs and TWIC needs coincide. Having both makes you highly sought after by many carriers, as a new driver or an experienced driver.

Just an fyi: My license,w hazmat, expires 7/16/2016. So this week, about a month ahead, I started the process of renewal. Im in Albuquerque, NM; it used to be that the MVD had their own fingerprinting setup right there in the office; well not anymore; don't know what happened there.

I called the state CDL line and was given the TSA number to call; upon which I was informed that there are 2 'contractors' in Abq and all appointments are booked up till the middle of August. Well, that's no good.

I discussed with the TSA service person if I have any options; and yes I did, although they sucked. I ended up driving 145 miles one way to Farmington,NM where the fingerprint appointments were wide open. I wanted to get this taken care of instead of letting it hang around for months.

After a little research (I don't fly that much) I found out that there is a TSA program called TSA pre check where airline passengers can get fingerprinted, and 'qualified' and then they get to go through a special quicker TSA line at the airport and that is what is causing the backup.

    So, good luck out there.

    A point of order...

My own fingerprints are on file with several federal agencies as well as that of Arkansas due to a separate and completely different license I have to carry in addition to my license.

Does that mean I can bypass the fingerprint requirement for Hazmat? Arkansas can and will pull up my prints now in the system with a few keystrokes.

Sorry if didnt clarify. I hold a USCG Capt. License. 200 Ton. Meaning I am licensed to transport passengers and operate vessels to 200 Ton. Lots of hoops to jump through for license. I am a commercial fish boat owner here in Alaska. So only fish for 2-3 months a year. I was bored one year and wanted something to do. That was 2008. So went OTR 3 years minus fishing season.
