    TSA's Process

You start the TSA background records check after you apply for your CDL at DMV, successfully complete all appropriate law tests, and submit a valid Medical Examination Report form (DL 51). Go online www.hazprints.com or call 1-877-429-7746 to make an appointment with a TSA agent. You must submit a $94 federal fee and any additional required information to the designated TSA agent. The TSA agent will advise you of the fingerprint requirement. You must also provide the TSA agent with a DMV Commercial Instruction Permit and one of the following identification documents:

A California driver license and/or California identification card
    An out-of-state driver license

So my understanding is you take the hazmat test first, pass it & then you get the TSA background stuff done.

    Flying Dutchman Thanks this.

Just re-newed Lic in Aug..I have most of the endorsements...
ONLY was required to retake the Haz-Mat test and pay
$39.00 for that band then $89.50 to TSA for another clearence. In California this ios every 5 years to keep
your Haz-Mat current...and to extort more of your hard earned money from you.

    Flying Dutchman Thanks this.

did you have to be fingerprinted again or just do the background check?

Had to do the fingerprinting again (live-scan).
Only took 8 days to get the letter back from TSA.

You know I never got my letter from TSA. I called the number they gave me when I did the fingerprinting/background check a week later and they told me I passed. The day I passed my cdl test (third party tester at school) I called the dds and they had it in their computer so I just took the test when I went to get my license. I wonder if I should call about that letter or not, but the dds has the info so I guess I'm good there.

As long as your DMV has the clearence on file, you are good to go. Plus no one has asked me to show the letter from TSA.
The great computer god knows all.....

Thanks for clearing that up. I have some drivers telling me their haz is no longer valid because its been 3 years since they took their test. I'm thinking if it was 2 years (like I have heard) they would have gotten a letter from the DMV regarding the situation. The license renewal method seems much more sensible.

I have a California CDL with HazMat endorsement. I was required to retest after 2 years to maintain the endorsement. The test was administered by my employer (no cost). My employer stated that I must take and pass the test every 2 years or have the endorsement removed from my CDL by going in to DMV and have it re-issued without the endorsement. I was informed that this is a California requirement. Have not seen it in writing, just information from my employer.
