It's pretty simple, really. Honing your craft requires getting certifications in the areas you might need. It demonstrates your motivation to your employer and will increase your income because you will not be excluded from certain loads. Get it.

Where are you looking to work bro? I just received my CDL today at the Salinas DMV. Im not too far away from Fresno (couple hours) but I was curious as to who would hire on rookies such as us-especially hauling Hazmat.

A common carrier will tell you, you need hazmat, but hazmat loads are far and few between. Plus usually there are 2-3 drivers in the area for a load. They'll give it to the more experienced driver first.

If you want hazmat, get it. Like others say, know your job. I treat all loads like they are hazmat, so it's no biggie. Drive with a positive attitude, do your job and you don't have to worry about tickets.

You have to get a background check and get fingerprinted, so while you're home is a good time. I think it's about 3 weeks before you get your clearance, so don't let it interfere with your training.

I have experience this more then once while working for a LTL company, I would check and secure the load and find a tank of 6.1 poison that was not on paperwork or had a manifest for it.

Go get your hazmat and don't be concerned about it. As mentioned here the only time fines are stiffer is if you are driving a hazmat vehicle. I drive hazmat for a living and love it. It all depends on what you want to do and what interests you.

get the endorsement that way you know what to do incase you get a load with hazmat. some hazmat canbe hauled without the endorsement depending on th quanity being shipped. Some shippers lie about the amounts on the manifest of sealed loads. Bass Pro does this all the time with Werner, I got inspected and thated god that I had the endorsment saved me a ticket for hauling hazamt with out proper liciense. Plus some stiffer regs are coming about hazmat and hauling it.
