I’m pretty sure LTL carriers are charging extra now to move HM shipments. Mine is for certain.
-
usually doesn't pay that much more, however, it makes you available for more loads than the next guy.
-
Pays the same, hand it to you and you need to have it right.
I turned in my hazmat a long time ago when a dispatcher could not stand to wait the 40 minutes bypass in Baltimore (Key Bridge south) Ive about all the hazmat I want anyway, Someone else can take it. -
Hazmat is not worth it. even the DOT doesn't have a good handle on it.
The cause if my audit started out when a company re-worked an export shipment from non toxic compressed gasses to include a few with a PIH [Poison Inhalation Hazard] and the driver failed to call in the changes.
We were able to haul the original load but not the Table one material. Just for ####s and giggles they used an old placard JUST a few days after it's 'Use 'Em Up' time had expired.
FMCSA was sitting outside Portsmouth Marine Terminal with a VA DOT inspector. The Federal guy wasn't too happy. They took the load in because they figured it was safer than sending it back...
Our terminal refused the next load because it was all Table one gasses.
Later they checked and the carrier used was ONLY a $750,000 insured, non haz mat carrier.
Later I shared this with the DOT auditor who didn't care and did nothing about it.
We got fined $6K for that and I would bet the same carrier is still doing those runs today.
Your mileage may vary but I doubt it!BUMBACLADWAR Thanks this. -
Yes,Hazmat can be a BAD DAY.One time SW Air Cargo refused a load of muffin mix.Ok..So you ask how is Muffin Mix Hazmat?..and why would they REFUSE it?Well...it Didnt start out Hazmat.Something was "Wrong" with the "wording" on the bills.1st refusal.Took back to base...by this time ...had to keep it Cool...reworked into new oversize boxes with "Dry Ice" to cool it.Went back next morning...WTF refused again.Didnt like the wording on bills.Fixed that...by now boxes are getting "Soggy". Fixed wording on bills.Still WONT ACCEPT....NO Explanation Given.Come to Find Out(Finally)Get "The real story. Its food product ,so They Cant cut it open ...and Now the dry ice makes it HAZMAT ASO.Net Result...Their "DOGS" WERENT AVAILABLE to "Sniff it out". That was the Whole holdup 3rd time around.LolMACK E-6 Thanks this.
