My endorsement saved my job. My company downsized. They didn't lay anyone off, you know, they have ways of getting rid of drivers. I work for JB Hunt. They decimated the over the road division. I was making 45 cents a mile, top pay, and those were the guys on the hit list. Those that remain on the OTR board had their pay cut to 36 cents, or lower. I was moved to a dedicated account, because of my haz-mat endorsement, and I'm pretty much still at my old pay.
The bottom line is, competition out there is fierce, drivers are a dime a dozen these days. The haz-mat endorsement makes you a little more valuable than the driver who doesn't have it. -
JustSonny Thanks this.

Resurrecting an old thread. I'm going for my hazmat, probably today. I read through the manual and took a few practice tests missing no more than 1 question on each test. I'm just curious on this background check. I've had a few done, most recently for my concealed carry permit. It took 10 mins, as well as any background check done when I purchase a handgun. I guess the hazmat one is more in depth? My dad, uncle, and pap all held top secret classification in the navy so hopefully there won't be any problems.
If I passed 5 tests in IN (first try) to get my cdl there (IN op, motorcycle, cdl gen knowledge, combination, and air brakes). Hazmat can't possibly be that difficult is it? -
I took my Hazmat a few years ago and my opinion was that it was the most challenging of the CDL tests unless you have dealt with Hazmat before in some other job. I passed it on the first try. It just more or a headache memorizing placards, numbers and stuff. Now the background check has gotten more strict. I need to transfer from NY to NJ and I have to go to the TSA and get finger printed.

You'll do fine. It probably is the most difficult because it deals with so much information.
I think the drivers that have the most trouble do so for two reasons. One, many people fear tests and don't do well because of this. Two, they didn't study the material well enough.
Based on what you've said and previous posts, I doubt either of these apply to you. Good luck. -
I took the hazmat test in my state when I went for my permit. Missed one question, all I did was read the book 2 times and take a couple of practice tests my school gave me, it wasn't that hard. Now I am just waiting for my background check to come back.
