hazmat

Well I checked this morning, and Hazmat's a buck-fifty in fees and a 90 day wait. I think the next time somebody tells me to get HZMT, I'll ask them for the $150 upfront.

At least,,,, untill I'm more serious/desperate for ANY job.

 

It is a federal program and I paid $91.00 in Washington. When I checked into getting my license transferred to Florida it was still $91.00. I don't know why someone would charge $150.00. I only waited 3 weeks and had my letter from the Department of Homeland Security. My two cents.

 

Its a federal program but probably outsourced in most cases to small offices or clinics or whatever you want to call them. I cant remember how much it cost me this last time but it only took about 3 or 4 weeks.

 

As some have stated, it will make you a better candidate in the job market. They are correct. If I was a company, I would hire the person who could pull any load that was needed.

However, I would not work for a company that only paid you more when you haul HazMat. They should pay you more because you are qualified to haul it.

Now if you are considering working for one of the many junk OTR companies out there, it won't make a difference. They may pay more for HazMat but you aren't going to be making any money for the time spent away from home to begin with.

HazMat has helped me in my career. I made a little over 82K last year working Monday thru Friday, during the day pulling tankers.

I paid $89.75 for my Hazmat. The FBI does the background check. I have pulled 4 placard loads since I started driving. Also haven't been paid extra for it,but those loads seem to be longer and not as rushed as non-hazmat loads.

 

What everyone else said is true, my two cents is simply this: Being a ltl driver that hauls alot of hazmat, (I'm placarded almost every day) actually hauling the freight is no big deal at all. However after renewing it again last week I was thinking it sure is alot of hassle keeping it lol.

 

hazmat was not a problem..... Take the test .It is worth the extra few cents per load...

And if it keeps you moving and gets you a job in this economy.. DO IT

 

I can understand why it's $150 verses $90,,, EVERYTHING's more expensive in NY.

turned 21 yesterday, went and took my hazmat and doubles/triples tests (had to wait til i turned 21)

i passed the doubles/triples but failed the haz by 2 questions


some of the questions i failed but cant find in the book, in my own words


Q; you are transporting a trailer loaded with 1.1 and 1.2 explosives, what placard do you use?

i put 1.1 but think it was wrong.....a driver i work with said it would be 1.1 and dangerous, another driver said you cant load 1.1 and 1.2 together

Q: you are hooking a set of doubles and one of the trailers has 1.1 explosives on it, do you want this to be your front or rear trailer?

i put rear cuz i would think youd want it away from the driver and fuel tank, but a driver at work said front cuz the front box dont wiggle as much


any ideas?
