I have a Cat 3406-E that was platinum in-framed exactly one year ago and 96000 miles. It has developed a head gasket leak. Bought the kit through CAT and had it done by my local "CAT guru". Thought I was saving a buck with him doing it instead of CAT. He's bucking me on doing anything about it.
My biggest question is, is there something going on that is causing that I'm not seeing or thinking about. And am I thinking right that he should at least offer to fix at a discounted rate. Any wisdom and input would be great!

I wouldn't call your mechanic a Cat Guru if you developed a head gasket leak ? What makes you think it's a head gasket ? Didn't he check the protrusion(counterbores)? To answer your question, he should do it for nothing(warranty) but to keep the peace, I would tip him something.

How do you know it is a head gasket, what is leaking, where? Most head gasket failures this soon after replacement are almost always due to improper liner protrusion.

Are you sure it is leaking from headgasket? If the spacerplate was reused or the deck of the block wasn't level it may seep a bit. It could be that and not liner protrution. If it isn't real bad and your not loosing coolant. Then don't worry about it. I had one that leaked for 4 yrs. Just enough to wash the motor about once a month. It all depends on how true everything was and how clean it was when he put it back together.

If you are under one year there is warranty when a platinum kit is purchased, two years if installed by cat/teps dealer, with an option to buy a third year. might want to check with cat.

Good luck getting warranty on a headgasket unless it was done at a cat shop!

I just had a platinum done about 3 weeks ago. Cost me 23,800. After hearing your story I'm glad I let cat do it. Here is the warranty

Another cut rate "guru" hanging a driver out to dry. A CAT house measures and documents all 6 liner protrusions at 4 different spots. Worth every cent of their high dollar rate imo. They will stand behind it when gurus don't.
