I've only had an issue with one black hat, but for the most part, all the ones i bump into are pretty cool.

Jim: Did you find the orientaion difficult? Was the agility test difficult? Can you give me an idea of how your day goes i.e. What percent of your driving is during the day and night. Do you typically pick up your loads at night or in the morning? Does Maverick get you home as they say almost every weekend? Would you consider this a high pressure job? Could you respond to whatever else you can think of along these lines also.

    Thanks

Best thing to do is read this post at the beginning as I go through the whole thing. The agility test was not difficult for me.
I like to get up early and start rolling around 0300 so that I can shut down early and get a parking spot. It does depend on when I am supposed to pick up ect for me to do that. I have gotten home most weekends.
It can be a very high pressure job in the beginning as you are getting used to everything...but as time goes on and you have done everything many times it gets easier. The most stressful thing for me was backing in truck stops. I used to ovoid them, but now they are not a big deal as I feel pretty comfortable backing in any situation.
You learn to not rush and not worry if you are making another driver wait, as I am always willing to give them all the time they need.
Most of the loads I pick up are during the day but you do get night ones from time to time.

All good advice. I always preferred to do the same, if possible.

Just wanted to stop in and say that I'm still alive lol. I got my first load this past Thursday; which got me home this weekend! I leave out tomorrow headed for a Monday delivery in Georgia. My fm said he would like me to leave on Sundays for awhile, until I got use to everything. I heard several drivers say that you will never forget your first load and believe me, I will never forget it! I'm sure all of the drivers that have been at Maverick for awhile have been to Portage, IN to pick up a coil. But, for any new guys reading this; when you go check in, make sure you read anything that is posted. I didn't and found out the hard way that I should have gotten the paperwork off of the coil that was loaded on my trailer and brought it back to the shipping office to verify that I had the right coil. I got a shotgun coil and had it chained, strapped, tarped and already pulled out of the building. However, when I went back to the shipping office to get my paperwork, I saw a sign that said, "drivers bring paperwork off of coil, back to the office to verify you have the right one". I was like, you have got to be kidding me. Needless to say, I untarped the coil outside in the wind, but luckily after I got the paperwork off of the coil and went back to the shipping office; I had the right coil on my trailer. THANK GOD!!! My tarp job looked like crap after I had to re-tarp it and I had to go back over to Gary to get my truck looked at because the check engine light came on as I was pulling out of Portage. While I was at Gary, there was two drivers who I didn't know at all and I asked them that if they could tell me what I did wrong on my tarp job. I informed them that it was my first load and they both walked me through it from start to finish. I still have jitters, but I'm sure I will until I get use to everything.

Yep, it doesn't matter how many loads you secured and tarped with your trainer, it is still a whole different ball game once you are doing it 100% yourself. Congrats and keep us posted.

Most of the US Steel plants are like that with the paperwork off the coils. Now that it has happened to you, you won't soon forget to ask the loader if you need to grab the card off the coil.

    Call me sometime..

    Later,

    Dave

Tarps? Chains? Coils? Sounds like way too much work for me. I'd rather play in the sand.:biggrin_255:
