    The AC is run to help prevent fogging the inside of the windshield. When I lived in N WY I would frequently run without the defroster after scraping the windshield and the snow would blow off. When I got too cold and ran the heater/def it would melt the snow etc

    The AC runs because it actually removes moisture from the air coming out the vents.
