    Hey all.

I'm going from a low pro step to a double drop trailer (40 ton with a flip). And I'll probably need to replace much of my securement equipment.

My trailer will have D rings and chain drops and I'll be going from 3/8" to 1/2" chains. The hooks on my 3/8" are the type to hook back to a link. But I noted the 1/2" have hooks designed to hook directly to the D rings. Is this correct?

    My question is this...
-Do I get the chains with hooks on both ends? If so, would I have to remove a hook each time I need to use the chain drops?
    - Also, what would be a good length?

And if anyone can give me tarp size recommendations.

    THANKS!!!

I'm not a HH guru by any stretch. I have 4 tail chains made up that are 8 feet long. One of each style hook. They are the cats meow for equipment. A lot of guys use the pull type pin in the second picture instead of a cotter key. I carry 8', 10', 12' and 16' long chains. I probably wouldn't get 10' again. A lot of HH guys have 4' and 6' too.

You might also want to get binders with the large slip hook end to go right to a D ring.

I just got a 12'x16' tarp, d rings on all 4 sides. My other tarps are 16'x24' again d rings all 4 sides.

No you would not need to remove a hook to use a chain drop, if it's the style I'm thinking of.

They make slip hooks or foundry hooks in all sizes and ratings. I have some in grade 70 3/8 to match my chains. They are also on one end of a 8' chain with a standard grab hook on the other end.

You can use a grab hook with a d ring it's just not as easy.

You have latches on your slip hooks?
And why is the mudflap between the chains? Personal preference or company policy?

That's a fed requirement. They don't want the chains to rub against each other.

I HAD latches on my slip hooks. As you can see they were brand new. They no longer have them.

Some dot officers don't like to see the chains touch. It's easy to put something in between them. I always carry a bunch of cut up rubber mudflaps. Free and some of the most versatile things a open deck driver can have.

My company doesn't have any securement policies past what the dot has set forth. They trust us to use our best judgment to keep the load secure.

Cool. Just asking I've never been hassled. Mud flaps or conveyor belting has lots of uses.

A few short sec. of chain with hooks on both ends are very easy to use when chaining down some things?
