I'm not saying it's not a good idea or that there aren't DOT out there that prefer it I'm just saying it's not a regulation.

Well, if it's not a reg, they can't write it.

On my 55 ton I carry 8 1/2" chains 36" long. Grab hook on one end slip hook on the other. I use them more than anything on machinery, on my 60 ton I transfer those over and I have 8 1/2" maybe 12' long.

I'm aware of that, I bet you can't find a single person who had been wrote for it. You'll hear stories about how someone "heard" they will or it happened to a "buddy". Sometimes it's better to appease than to argue, they can't write it for that and you argue they'll look for something. I personally have never been bothered.

I will always cross chain when I can. At 15 feet wide and 16 tall with top heavy pieces I will not just secure to the same side. Same thing with cross chaining machines on double drops. I'm not going track to trailer on a bad Angle.

I go from the outside to the middle of the trailer, if it's too heavy I try to get some pulling straight down.

If you can see the chains I have here, I have the one on the left side of the picture I'm hooked to the outside of the track then to the inner beam. The chain you can see on the other side hooks to the beam then around the idler and back to the beam. I can see any advantage to taking those chains to the other side of the trailer. Not saying my way is right and anyone else is wrong, just my train of thought.

    Thanks for all you help!
So not to sound too ignorant, you would just gang the 3 foot lengths when needed?

I'll do the same on a lowbed but most double drops are one solid deck so no option to go to the centre.
