Are you planning on hauling only equipment? I know I (typically) pull everything but equipment on double drops and use indirect securement all the time.

Like this load. You can't see them but each end is cross chained. (Direct) and then five chains across the middle. (Indirect)

Yes. I have to mix it up. That was my dilemma. I'll be hauling machines, but also freight similar to what you have above.
But I have 12 pcs of 3/8" 15 to 20 feet long. That should be fine for the general freight and indirect securement.
But I'll go direct with the 1/2" where I can gang short lengths if needed.
Am I making any sense here??? Experience is the best teacher, but I don't want to get stuck on site.

Well, as the old saying goes, a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. Less links equals less chance for a weak link. You also have to consider a long chain will stretch a lot more than a short one.. Then you have the fact that short chains are just easier to deal with.

Keep in mind I'm coming from a world of "slip hooks" only.
So... what type of hook would be best on the binder? maybe one of each type?

Depends on your situation and what you're doing. There's really no one right answer.

Look at @johndeere4020's picture. He has binders with a slip hook on one side. Looks like it works well for him. I've only ever used grab hooks though.

Yes that makes sense. I personally would only carry 8 16' 3/8 chains. I guess you could carry what you have and then after awhile re-evaluate. You already have them anyway.

So what length 1/2 " would you recommend with a solid deck? For say an over width track vehicle.
