So, I have been browsing this web site for a few months now off and on and since I recently passed my road test and received my CDL and I am trying to attain a career as a driver I thought I would join the site and be part of the community. I'm located in Pittsburgh for the moment with the hopes to move south in the next few months. I would really like to get into vehicle transportation (car haulers, race transporter, demo car transporters) in the future but realistically searching for something to tied me over until I get more "real world" experience and can pursue those types of hauls.

My question: I have just started to apply to companies. When I was younger my driving record was not so great. Prior to going to school I ran my PA DMV record for the past 10 years and it has come back completely clean, no infractions, no accidents. I quess what I am trying to ask is what/how do companies perform background checks? Do they simply request the same MVR that I requested through Penndot?

Any help/guidance would be greatly appreciated

When I was w/ SWIFT transportation they had a car hauling division, they mostly pull vans.reefers and flatbeds BUT they are the best managed large carrier in the country (my opinion). So give the recruiting office a call
The industry is so highly regulated the background check will make you feel like you have been to a proctologist!

For sure, I am definatley finding this out. Even though from what I ran on my own and my record came back with zero infractions I applied to a couple of places and one of the places called back and said I am extremely hire able from all my records, they just don't have a spot open for recent school grads but said when something becomes available.

In the mean time I signed onto a steel tubing plant to deliver around my local area. Only driving a little truck at the moment but at least it's experience and I have some money coming in until I can pick up and move south.

Why not just hire on with a company that has a terminal in the South. Driving a little truck local doesn't count as experience. Where do you want to live in the South? Many companies hire from your area and have terminals in the South.
