Allow me to introduce myself.
You may all be wondering why I've joined this forum seeing as I don't have my Class 1.
Well- it's because this is the best work forum I've stumbled across! It looks like lots of members sharing their valuable experience and being very supportive to new people trying to break into the industry.
I've kind of hit a wall with the work search as I only have a class 4 and 5 (note: AAA driving record).
Training to get a Class 1 is quite expensive and this forum often says that you're better off getting hired first and then trained by the company as even with the class 1 , you're at a disadvantage until you've clocked some real road time.
(Misc. note: Schooling for Heavy Equipment Operator or driving on Mine Sites, etc. is a lot more ex$pensive!!!)
Here's my situation:
I have no trade and am not very mechanically inclined.
I'm 46 yrs. old and therefore a super physical job like"roughneck" is probably just not realistic.
I not a strapping 250lb farm boy from Saskatchewan... I'm 5'10/170lb.
The biggest strike against me is a foot problem that makes it hard for me to find safety boots that I can wear.
Funds are kind of tight right now so renting an expensive place up north would be crazy- I need a CAMP job.
Also- my vehicle is parked until spring so no vehicle right here and now.... this really sucks as these posts always say: "Don't waste your time with emails and phone calls!- Show up in person!" (and I agree with this).
On a more positive note:
I'm honest and hard working.
I want and need to work like a demon for a few years.
I called myself Inuvik on this post because I'm prepared to work and live anywhere!
.... I just need to break in somewhere and PROVE myself!.......
Ready & willing.... just not sure which doors to knock on.
If any of you out there have a tip for me, I want to thank you ahead of time!
Hello everyone.....I just signed up.
