My name is Jose and I live (at the moment) in Kaiserslautern Germany. I am career military and will be retiring in 2.5 years. I took a break from the military back in 96-99 and drove OTR for 2 of those years. I loved it but made a decision to come back and get my retirement. Now that military retirement is approaching I am looking forward to get back on the road.

Has anyone else here been in the same situation? Having experience but not recent? I still have my CDL but not my Hazmat endorsement anymore. Is it going to be difficult to get a good paying driving job? Anyway, any input from any retired military would be helpful.

I look forward to reading your stories and to find out what is going on in the trucking industry these days!

I think I can help you; I went through the same situation as you, military, civilian trucker, military again retire 25 yrs military, then back to trucking.
Much has changed in short period of time.
You will probably need a refresher course to be eligible for hiring. Many companies do this, some with OJT & some with schooling on-site. I understand Swift has one of the better refresher schools and is a certified school recognized in USA & Canada.
The best pay now is in Tanker/hazmat or reefer. I made about $55K per year OTR reefer and about $65K per year OTR tanker /hazmat. Right now I'm kicked back in the Orient taking a break.

    My recommendation would be:
    Start looking for refresher training.
Start looking at websites for trucking companies you may be interested in.
    Examples : Tanker/hazmat
    Quality Carriers
    Trimac
    Tankstar.com
Oil field tanker work(one company is driveffe.com)tanker div.
    A&R Transport (artransport.com)

Reefer : Many good companies for this work.
    Swift has reefer division.
    Navajo.com
    drive4marten.com

Check other threads on here also.

VRAP - Veterans Retraining Assistance Program may pay for school.
