This is a pretty good site---plenty of drivers who clearly have knowledge and experience, and who can advise you so you avoid pitfalls or dangerous situations. When it comes to OTR, it's not only about DRIVING... you're also dealing with the D.O.T., surly dock personnel and fuel desk employees, company dispatchers jacking you around, the whole nine yards. A little courtesy goes a long way in this industry, believe me... and there are times when simply walking away and taking a few deep breaths is the wisest policy. Having said all this, the fact that you enjoyed traveling in the past is a really good sign, and bodes well for any future OTR career. Some people don't know what they're getting into when they hit the road, and they wind up miserable... others adapt and streamline their lives while havin' an absolute blast. When I first started driving OTR, I tossed all my preconceived notions about "how life on the road should be"---I committed myself to the trucking lifestyle, constantly learning new things out there, then I restructured my entire life around truck driving. Do this, and you're likely to succeed... if you aren't committed and focused, this industry will chew you up, spit you out, and toss you a nickel for your trouble and grief. I can honestly say this: my career road has been rocky at times, but I stuck with it, and, overall, I've never had so much fun in my life. The best advice I can give you: take it all in stride, handle your business, and never stop learning... do these things and you'll go far while having the time of your life. The fact that you've already found this site does ya credit... I didn't even know of sites like this back in the day, when, in nautical terms, I was "greener than the starboard light." Anyway, good luck to you!!! Maybe we'll see you someday out there on the road... :Navigator: :Earth: :Straight road: :Transportation cost :smt023

Hey, hand! If you want to jumpstart your trucking career, go to this website:

    www.bumper2bumpertruckbook.com

Do yourself a favor, throw down $59 (+ tax, shipping and handling, etc.) and read this book cover to cover... you'll have a big advantage over other trainees if and when you go to driving school. "Adios!"

Thank you Railsplitter for your honest and level-headed take on driving. It is appreciated hearing someone who has been in the industry for a long stretch talk about how they (overall) enjoy their job.

OTR is not for everybody... but with some, it gets in their blood. I actually have Diesel #2 coursing through my veins... :biggrin_2559: You can see some cool OTR photos here on this site... I posted 'em for that reason, right? If you want a good laugh, check out my latest post: "INTERNET RAMBO!!!"

    Iron Flyer Thanks this.
