Just retired from a desk job and looking to drive big rigs. Got my VA CDL instruction permit and looking at CDL schools in VA. Boy, is that an eye opener. Any suggestion on CDL schools located in Northern VA would be most welcomed. The other question is that I am 68 (in very good health) and would that age be a show stopper in getting a job?

You wanting to run coast-to-coast or regional?

Start a list of companies right now that interest you and check which endorsements may be required. Try to get the CDL permit and endorsements before starting school. Start submitting applications the day school starts. Get a TWIC and passport. Google for nearest TWIC office.

Here's a few companies that hire in your area, but there's plenty more. The CDL school may recommend some companies, but look elsewhere also:

    Shaffer Trucking
    Abilene Motor Express
    Con-way Truckload
    Pride Transport
    Navajo Express
    Roehl Transport
    Ozark Motor Lines
    Halvor Lines
    ABF Freight System
    H.O. Wolding

In school you may be asked to work for US Express ; this company is good for team driving only. If you want to run as solo driver, don't apply unless you want to hand unload trucks every day.

    Chinatown..

    Thanks for the info.

I have the CDL instruction permit (Class A single and combination, tankers, doubles and triples, and air brakes). I will complete the Hazmat endorsement over the next couple weeks while I am looking for a CDL school.

Too old...stop it! If you can fog a mirror, and pass the physical, and your attitude doesn't think you are too old, then you will do fine. Don't rule out traveling to a school. Remember, you will be traveling way, what's the difference if you leave home a month or so early for school.

I live in Florida and went to SW Missouri for school, for Con-Way Truckload. Still with the company nearly 4 years later. Company paid the travel expenses, I paid about $600 for room and board for 5 weeks, and about $1000 for tuition. Company paid the rest of tuition on the day I delivered my first load as a solo driver...no holding me hostage to pay back my tuition over the coming months like other companies.

I got a Missouri CDL using the dorm at the school as my address, and converted it to Florida the next time I went home.

Talk to a recruiter there and get the current scoop.

Another thing to consider, all companies that hire new drivers, have you train with a seasoned driver, trainer...Look at companies that have you driving all or most of the training miles. Other companies have the student driving "team" with the trainer. That means one of you is always sleeping while the other is driving...not a real good learning experience.

    Good luck to ya.
