Checking in from mid-tn! Nearly started with TDI in Murfreesboro this morning, due to a schedule issue I can start until this coming Monday. No illusions about what I'm getting into. A good friend is a driver and we've talked a lot. I'm a non-traditional student (story of my life). 49 and making a career change, I'm to the point where I just want to work and get left alone. Money is nice but not the end all, as long as the bills are paid I'm happy. Children are grown for the most part, and wife of 24yrs understands what I'm looking for. Been doing some reading on here and I've gathered some valuable info.

Welcome to the forums, Mitchell. Trucking is a great choice for a second career.

Lord I dunno, reading many of the negative responses makes me wonder. Hopefully my work ethic and initiative will carry me forward. I'm not looking to get rich, just hope to pay the bills and have some play money. I've already seen much of the country, but I am looking forward to getting mobile.

Admittedly, we have some image problems within the trucking industry. This forum is very open about letting drivers share things that bother them about the undesirable side of the business. Consequently, these issues often seem more widespread than they actually are. But, there's no doubt that we've got some undesirables that need to be doing something else.

There are certainly a few bad companies in the mix and plenty of problem drivers, as well. I think that many of the driver problems boil down to a lack of maturity with some drivers - some people just don't do well with the minimal supervision that truck driving demands. At your age, and since you're looking for a second career, that shouldn't be a problem for you. Come on in and help be part of the solution.

You will be fine ! The negative post are pointing to the carriers to steer away from ! Check with epes transport and see if your school is on their approved school list. I am a trainer for them . The path you start on will make a huge difference in your travels ! I wise man learns from the mistakes of others, as well as his own ! Just avoid some the bad apples! Best of luck
