Put it in the truck now if you really think you need it, a good running core is always worth more
Than something with a window or other issues, if not, sell whatever you can and buy one when you need it, sitting doesn’t do anything any good
Hello, How do you move an engine to storage?

Call a machinery moving company. They specialize in heavy objects. If they can move a giant safe out of a basement they can handle your problem.
Remember nobody said it wouldn’t cost money. -
A towing company or machinery moving company would not be anything less than 2k-3k even for a short distance forklifts and cranes are not cheap, and if a rotator is involved which will most likely be if you call a towing company then that will be 5 folds more, and when time comes to pull the motor from storage you will have to do it all over again so you pay twice,
Buy a cheap used trailer with at least 3500 lbs capacity, the narrower/shorter the better, all you need is a half ton truck to tow it or use your truck if it has a ball hitch receiver, put the engine on it and brace it, and back it into a drive-up storage unit of the trailer size, when it's time to pull the motor out of storage you just hook it up and drive it to the shop,
If you have a garage or even just a driveway at home you can save up on the storage unit cost this way, just back it in to your garage and leave it there, or weather proof it with heat shrink wrap (Yes there is such thing for machinery and motors) and tarp it in your driveway as to not make it an eye sore if you have neighbors from hell or an HOA,
Or rent space in a trailer/boat/RV parking lot and park the trailer there without even needing a storage unit, just shrink wrap and tarp, will be way cheaper than a drive-up unitLast edited: Dec 25, 2024

That's what I'd do.
A dual axle trailer and storage.
Probably won't find a single axle for the weight of trailer plus motor and trans. -
Try using seed corn pallets…they are built incredibly well. They come with about 3000 pounds of seed worth 15-25k so they have good reason to make them good. You can probably get used ones for 20 bucks. We have made many engine pallets from them. Otherwise we build one from steel. A lumber yard might be willing to help move them or @Ruthless might bring his moffet if you’re close to him
Ruthless Thanks this. -
Pretty quick hiring a job like that, OP gonna have more into storing it than he could buy another for. Trailer accessible storage by me is $375 a month
Pay to pull it, package it and store it gonna be pretty deep into that checkbook. -
I’d buy a used 16 foot dual axle cargo trailer and get the pallets from a shop that swaps engines
I’d just put the engine and trans in the cargo trailer and find a place to park the trailer
put some GPS trackers or AirTags on the engine and trailer so if it gets stolen you will be notified and can locate it
Either that or call a business that moves safes and heavy machinery
they will have the trailer and tools and knowledge to move it if you want to keep it in storage unit
you’re also gonna have to pay to
Move it again when you want it out
so a small cargo trailer would be the best option I thinkRuthless Thanks this. -
Get heavy duty dolly’s, strap engine to them and call a tow truck.
