Thanks. Yeah I have contacted my local HAM operators club. They are going to teach a course in the spring, so I will get my licence then. I bought the book from Durham radio while I was there too.

I really bought the CB's for roadside emergencies, etc, and for fun while traveling. Once I get me HAM licence I probably won't use them often, but it's nice to have them if you need them.

Not only is your antenna important, you have to have a good SWR and antenna ground... not electrical ground... the grounding for the antenna to get a nice low SWR. If your truck has crappy coax like my Volvo does, you will have to start from scratch.

Most people forget that you need great coax, too. Antenna(e) (if you want to pair them up) are only as good as the ground plane and quality of coax used.

Another surprisingly important factor is your microphone. Get an external speaker with talkback if your radio doesn't have it, that way you can hear what your outgoing sounds like. I have a Highgear Cobra with talkback external speaker. It's really nice. I picked up for $30 a Trucker Platinum Series noise cancelling microphone by road pro I think it is... it's SO MUCH nicer than my stock cobra mic. I like regular mics that have noise cancelling. I don't like the ones with batteries in them. I have two friends that have those and they just distort and drain batteries all the time.

    I'm rambling. I shut up now :)

    COAX ?

At 27 mhz coax under 50 foot is not a problem ...
PERSONLY I like LMR-400 but even it is overkill under 6 meters ....

This antenna is fed with LMR=400

Oh, I think I'm confused. I don't know the first thing about HAM radio. I thought this was about just plain Citizen's Band radios.

true, but I was talking about portable applications.

As in, getting into a truck that has coax installed by the factory. Usually, it's cheap and will get very poor SWR readouts, even with one or a pair of really great antennae mounted.
