I have a couple of years experience working for brokers (Cheap & Heavy, Turbo....I know, I know...), and dispatching at a small family run trucking company. I love the transporation industry. I made a decision that I regret, and left it about 5 years ago to become a social worker and have been working in child welfare since then. There is an oppotrunity for me to become a driver recruiter at this time, and I am trying to weigh it out. I immediately came to "the truckers report" to get a feel of the current industry and to read about some of the issues and obstacles that are facing drivers today. I will post again in other areas of the forum, but wanted to first introduce myself. Mainly I want to learn - I'd like to know real and honest opinions about the recruiters that drivers come into contact with. What is good about them? What is bad about them? What advice can you give me if I decide to become one? If I do become one, I'd want to be an advocate for the driver, helping understand his/her need and what they are looking for in a career.

In advance, thank you so much for all of the insight I hope to gain. If you have any opinions you'd like to share with me about being a driver today but do not want to post in an open forum, please PM me.

    Thanks so much!!!

I recently made a decision to change the type of hauling I was doing for 20 years. I am now with Schneider hauling crude in The Patch [Eagle Ford Shale] out of the CC TX Terminal. I am well paid, the job is easy, the shift about 10 hours, 5 days on 2 days off. Before I was a owner operator, had my own insurance, my authority, my customers, I did not use brokers, not even once. As I made the decision to change I looked at every part of my business. There were no go reasons to continue. I am happy and well paid, home everyday.

Whatever conditions made you leave before, proably exist today. Write down a Pro and Con List. If you study why you left trucking, you will come to the right conclusion. Be honest with yourself. Good luck

Thanks for the reply Stubby - I am glad you found a better type of hauling that meets your lifestyle needs. I am no longer a broker nor do I ever want to work for a broker again (ever), however, that job allowed me to talk with drivers from all walks of life (owner operators, company drivers, and everything in between) and allowed me to learn about the types of hauling out there (dry van, flat-bed, reefer, ltl, etc.). It was great experience, but I did not like the game of being a broker - at all. I had too much respect for the drivers and owner operators (mostly the o/o's), and would often fall short of the $ goals/quotas due to paying too high on loads. It was a big factor in why I left and why I will not return....

What I am not knowledgeable about is recruiting truck drivers....and that is where you, and other experienced drivers, will hopefully be of some service :)
