After so long thinking about getting my CDL I finally got it last month!!!, been here reading posts since last year about the insights of trucking before deciding whether or not get my CDL, glad I did. Went to a state school in Utah, took me awhile tho but paid out of my pocket,. i've been researching and applying everywhere!!! lol. tried major ltl's locally but most companies required some experience of a least a year. I've mostly worked at call centers and I had enough of that, no more sitting at cubicles taking calls to met quotas or someone breathing over my shoulders to meet sales for the month or getting write up,lol. I'm single thats one advantage I think for the changes I can make latter on. I will need to choose soon since I don't want to get rusty, its been like a month since I got my license. here's what is been going on with some of the companies I applied for, hope to make a good decision where to work at.
Local Construction companies: Geneva Rock, sun roc.
Moving companies: agents from allied, United and Mayflower. all of them wanted me to work right away, allied and united offered me 13 per hour but driving straight trucks first, after awhile they will test me out on a semi, mayflower was offering 14 per hour with the chance to move faster and drive a semi.from what i learned house holds moving goods picks up during the summer but slows down in the winter I'm holding to these as my last resort, I hurt my back last year twice but all is healed up. I know these will be back breaking so I might not risk it.so it depends.
LTL : Applied for Reddaway more than 4 weeks ago and haven't got any response, con-way is advertising on craiglist but every time I call the terminal they tell me the position is full, Have an interview with YRC next week, lets see how it pans out.they told me the position is for team, so not sure how's that may be is during training. I'll like to do solo.
Over the road: Schneider, they have regional with a possibility of 2 week on/1 week off and like it. but their pay is not ok I guess. KKW trucking which is regional, really thinking into this company I talked to some drivers and got told good things from the company. their training and pay is good.
Local: Pepsi, haven't heard from the since applied, Lowe's might get an interview next week.
This is a really short list from where I've been applying to, my goal is to stay local, I get my doubts sometimes going over the road but I might have to push myself and just do it,lol
this is been a valuable and entertaining site. Love driving, hope everything pans out.

Greetings and Welcome. There is a company up here crying for straight truck drivers. They are offering home nights, no weekends or holidays and even a helper. They deliver applicances to residents.I have no desire to take someones new fridge up two flights of stairs. Best of luck with your search.
hardworkinman and Chinatown Thank this. -
Your best pay annually will be tanker/hazmat. Figure avg. $65K per year.
Schneider hires new drivers for their tanker school. Do 12 months with Schneider tanker & then you can probably snag a high paying local tanker job. With tanker, you don't sit waiting for loads for hours or sit for hours getting unloaded like with dry van. That's why the annual pay is so much more.
YRC Freight is OTR teams. Don't think they use solo in that division.Drac1985 and hardworkinman Thank this. -
If you get in at YRC running teams take it! You won't be gone but 1 week or less. Good paying job! Great benefits! Eventually you can get a bid run solo. I believe teams pay more though. Skinny trucker and ACH1130 can tell you. Post in the YRC forum. I work for Reddaway and I'm making some good coin. Reddaway requires experience though.

I wouldn't mind, but then I saw you have to be a mover as well.looking at some guys being tired at the end of their shift working six days a week for allied and united. I'm only 26 but, I don't really wanna risk injuring my back again pulling or moving someone's furniture or appliances. bummer allied and united both train you to get your CDL, all you do is pay 40 dollars for the testing, I could have saved alot!!! but I guess from info I gathered it was best I went to a state school.

Schneider doesn't have a tanker division out of the Salt Lake Terminal, thats the thing. I'll have to relocate somewhere else, which will be costly and out of my budget for now.I'm trying to get as much info. to get for YRC team, as they don't have a description online.

Thanks for the lead, I'll post and see if I can get some replays in the forum about it. sounds like a good gig, if I get in, hope I can find a good driving partner to get along with,or I can bid for a solo run later on. made a lot of attempts to contact Reddaway out of Salt Lake but all the customer service could tell me is that they are reviewing applications still. for YRC I was able to make contact with HR in the Salt lake terminal.
-
Did you fill out an online application for Reddaway and were they hiring?
-
Yes I did, about a month ago. since then I've been calling 3-4 times per week customer service to contact the Utah terminal office to know the status of my application, all they say is that they are still reviewing applications, I have left voice mails to the people in charge, but I don't get any response. they post 2 or 3 times per week on craiglist and have their ad online open.
