I was recently laid off and I have been thinking about joining the ranks of Big Rig drivers. My dad drove a truck from 1967 to about 2002. Like railroading its a lifestyle not a job, so.......... Would I be better off going thru a Technical College or try to get on with a Big Company as a driver trainee?

Hello and Welcome to the Site

I think that the Community/Technical College is the best bet for truck driver training. You could qualify for free training through the WIA program or dislocated worker's program. The Admissions counselors at the College will be able to help you with that. You can also apply for funding through the Employment Security Commission(ESC).
Keep us posted and Best of Luck!!!!!Diesel_Smurf and simplyred1962 Thank this. -

Hi Toms Welcome to the group. Kickin is right goin through the Community / Technical College would be best. But make sure you look into the companies you want to drive for and ask which schools they accept as accredited schools for getting your CDL. Some companies get very picky and even if you have gotten your CDL they may rain on your parade and make you go to their school too (and then sign a contract to work for them for a year afterwards for much lower pay than another driver would get had they come straight to them not using their school and had gotten their CDL through an accredited CDL Training School)
GOOD LUCK!!kickin chicken and simplyred1962 Thank this. -
