I am a student who has just a couple more weeks until the drive test. It's been a lot of thinking, writing and praying for me to make the initial decision. Not the driving part- I love to drive and am getting the hang of the rig- but the industry itself. I've only applied to one company so far. The school wanted me to start applying before I even signed up for school! I didn't see the point. I applied at Northern Refrigeration and he called me and asked me to give him a call when I get my license (not sure if that means anything or not). The bigger companies like Werner and Schneider seem to be maybe a little too big... my trainer keeps asking me what I want but I don't know yet. All the research that I do, just leaves me with more questions. I am a petite female and am concerned that I may not have enough physical strength to load and unload regularly (I want to at least do some to stay in shape, but not sure about every the time- maybe none for the first year while I'm getting used to it all). I will get stronger- but not instantly... I am just rambling now so I'll say hey later. I love these forums! I get good info off of them. This is the second one that I have found useful to join. Thank you for it! :biggrin_25514:

    Thanks

It is not unusual to apply to companies before going to school... for some grants and programs like WIA you need a pre hire agreement from a couple companies before they will give you the grant or pay for the school... a lot of the larger companies that train also offer tuition reimbursement if you paid for your schooling...

I got my CDL in 2009 and got on with an O/O pulling flatbed.... but that did not goes as well as I hoped it would.. then I got on with a small family run company pulling reefer... but, it was a lose leaf paper log, run around scale houses, renegade company and I didnt want to mark my CDL and record up... so I went to Werner... and have been with Werner since the first of the year and I do like it here... I am happy with werner... I like that they have many different accounts.. I started on an account where I was home every weekend, then went to an account where I was home every night.. and now I am gonna go back to a home on weekends account...

Good luck to you... enjoy the journey..

Thanks! Warner is coming to the school next week and I'm looking forward to hearing them. I've heard good and bad so I wanted to see for myself. I do like that they have alt to offer and will let their employees move around in the company.
I appreciate the input. It's all a little overwhelming. I'm sure I'll make the right choice and if not then there's always the next time around:)
    Have a great day!!

There have been some good changes at werner.... one that everyone likes is they just raised driver pay... OTR got a 14% increase... and on many accounts they raised the stop and detention pay...

Also, they are now in the process of going with a 2 year old fleet and 6 years on trailers. .. it is nice to know you will be driving good equiptment.. they bough 1500 brand new trucks and issued them out and are now bringing in anouther 1500 brand new trucks...

One of the best changes is they just revamped their whole training program.. first, before being pjt with a trainer new drivers spend one day on the simulators. .. working on their shifting and stuff, then they spend a day with a certified instructor and do backing... their skills are all assed and they are assigned a trainer.... during training there are check points.. where the trainer and student are routed to a terminal and the students progress is assed again, if there is no improvement then they are pulled from that trainers truck and assigned another.. and that trainer may have to do more train the trainer or whatever before being assigned another student...

So this new revamped training program is weeding out the bad trainers by making them accountable for a students progress.. also, the pay incentive for trainers is based more on students progress and successful training...

More importantly, is the requirements to become a trainer are higher... it is based on your experience and perfomance as a driver.. then a skills test and assessment is given.. if you fail, you cant become a trainer...

I hope all companies that train follow and try to raise the standards of trainers and weedout those just doin it for the money...

Take care and good luck to you.....

Northern Refrigerated has an excellent reputation. Another driver posted this week he was offered a job with them after graduation. Used to they required 2 yrs. experience.

Pride Transport is 100% no-touch freight with pet and rider policy.
