Well it has to do with your log books and how you should fill them out. I will see if I can explain this without writing a book and so that you can understand.
All drivers must fill out a logbook.
There are four lines in your log:
Off duty
Driving
Sleeper
On duty
There are 24 hours of which have to be accounted for on a combination of these lines. There are rules that apply as far as how many hours you can drive or be on duty before you have to show so many hours of sleeper or off duty. For instance if you drive 10hrs then you have to show 10hrs of sleeper or off duty. The lines in your logbook are set up in 15 min increments. This is where the driver above is referring to. Basically he is showing driving on his driving line and he shows up to get unloaded. Since he is not driving but still working he must write in his log on the on duty line. Since he already checked in and the shipper is going to unload him then he can go to sleep while they do that. So now he logs his time under the sleeper line in his book. If he can mark down 10hrs on that sleeper line then when he leaves there he can drive 10hrs. before taking another break.
By no means is this a full explanation of logging just a brief description to help you understand the post. There are some really good threads on here that will help you understand logbooks a little more just use the search box.
Hope that helps a little.

you should get detention pay reguardless!, if your dispatched on this load and have to wait on it, shouldnt matter how you wait?, clime in the birth, say your time, request your detention, and roll on, Who do you drive for?

Driver has just arrived to get unloaded - Line 3, and then goes to Line 4, and takes the paperwork into the office, and then your saying take a 10hr break right there while getting loaded, and then when driver awakes fresh with 11 hrs, take 15 mins on line 4 to go and get the paperwork, and essentially would still be on detention until after recieving the paperwork when he awakes after the break?
I also think it's wrong they don't allow a break to be considered detention, which it should in this case. I mean it makes sense, and benefits both the company, and driver as far as I see it. Driver - Gets a fresh 11hrs. Company - Gets to give driver a new load. I mean does he really have any choice but to sit there while they unload? I guess it would be a gamble of sorts.. I mean could they actually take 10 hrs to unload him? Do they typically take 10hrs to load/unload a truck? I mean if they have a history of taking forever to unload a driver, and the driver needs the hours whynot just let them do a break right there? -
At least he can get some detention pay. When I worked for Butler Transport a few months ago, they refused to pay detention, period. After 2 months of that, I told them that I couldnt afford to work for them anymore and left...

Just because you go in the sleeper doesn't relieve the shipper from loading you within 2-3 hours, depending on your company contract. Your company is going to bill them regardless and it is your right to get your cut.
If you're like most larger companies, your dispatcher notes they took too long and initiates the detention. Usually by an email to the detention dept. The safety dept looks at your logs and sees you were in the sleeper at the shipper. Neither one puts the two together and says they aren't going to pay you for sleeping.
Just send your dispatcher a message at the 2-3 hour point... "I'm not loaded yet" and usually a good dispatcher will take it from there. They might tell you okay or remind me later....
That's all you have to do.
Then pray for a week!Civilservant Thanks this. -
unfortunately i dont get detention pay for time used to get a 10 hour break. Im picking the trailer up now i took the break. Just wanna get miles rolling and make money. Ill take it up Monday with operations if im not going to get compensated for the forced 10 hour breaks and this is going to be a on going thing ill have them route me to a terminal and they can have the truck. Hell if all else fails cypress will hire me.
I hate to be a dick but im out here to make money not sit for a day and only get 24 miles and not get compensated. aint the first time either. -
Don't get paid for a ten hour break?
I would take an eight hour split sleeper-berth at the dock and finish my break at a truckstop. Eight hours detention. BOOYAHtinytim and Civilservant Thank this. -
