I have a General Lee and I am wanting to get an external meter and also a nice feq counter. The meter is a must but the counter is not really needed. I just want something cheaper but reliable just so I can make sure my SWRs are in check and see what kind of power this thing is pushing.

Jetstream sold by RANDL.com makes several good mid priced meters.
Like this one http://www.rlham.com/cgi-bin/shop/modellookup.dbw?MODEL=JTWVUHF I have one and it is good from 80 - 3/4 meters.

As for frequency read outs / counters they are only as good as the time base in them ..... most are ok for CB but as far as reading down to 10 cycles or less forget it ..... unless you want to spend a bunch of bucks ......
