Just go to your Doctor get on blood pressure medicine if that's what you need, Heck it might save your life. It only takes a few days for the meds to get your BP down. I have to say that was pretty funny what that other driver said about your eyes.

You should not drive without a valid medical card. How high was your B/P? Normally, unless it's crazy high, you should have been given a 30 or 90 day card. After that, if B/P is under control you'll get certified for 1 year at a time. Check back with the doc that did the physical and ask about the short term card. But more important is for you to get it under control and keep it there. even without insurance, B/P meds are relatively inexpensive. This is not something to fool around with. Letting it go can cause damage to your heart and put you at risk for heart attack or stroke.

ii had high bp in the past and went for a dot physical and failed a few times, and had to go to my doctor for pills or to have him sign off that my BP was ok. as long as your current dot card is good you can drive, unless there are new rules in place in the last 6 months.
if you waited to long and your card expired, that's a toughie, my first response is do not do it!!!! but i have been in your boat before with the need to put food on the table and pay bills. the odds of a dot check are very small and if stopped i would just take the ticket for not having it with me and call the boss and tell him he needs to have some one come get the truck. (( there is NO WAY i would take that chance if you are OTR))
is there another job you can do at the shop for a few weeks until you get your bp right?? also yes you can collect unemployment in Michigan if your boss tells you he has no work for you because of your medical card. he is in essence firing you or laying you off because he has no work you can do.
good luck be safe. -

Richter,
would you show a link to regulations where it actually states that, I'd like to know if that's in writing somewhere. Appreciate it.
I would think it is not that way, as it is (or was) responsibility of driver to send in the new physical to state medical review board. But if the new reg's state that the examiner 'must ' now inform state of any and all phy. exam results, I want to see that.
From a point of view of law concerning doctor/client privilege, i.e. confidentiality, I find it hard to believe that the new reg's basically undue all that. Do you get my thinking here? I want to see the reg that makes you reach your definitive conclusion.Last edited: Jul 27, 2014

My medical certificate is still valid. Am I prohibited from operating a CMV if I have a medical condition that developed after my last medical certificate was issued?
PreviousNext
FMCSA regulations prohibit a driver from beginning or continuing to drive if their ability and/or alertness is impaired by: fatigue, illness, or any cause that makes it unsafe to begin (continue) to drive a commercial vehicle.
Even if a driver currently has a valid medical certificate, the driver is prohibited from driving a CMV with any medical condition that would be disqualifying or may interfere with the safe operation of a CMV. Once a disqualifying medical condition is resolved, and before resuming operation of CMVs, a driver is responsible for obtaining re-certification from a Medical Examiner. 391.45

My interpretation of this is that failing the new medical card test you became aware of a disqualifying medical problem and thus cant drive, Im sure a lawyer would agree if you go in an accident.Ribeye, Wild Murphy, Chinatown and 1 other person Thank this. -
I got my DOT physical 2 weeks ago, only approved for a year and I am on meds. She told me that is why she only approved me for a year.

You should have been given a 60 temporary card and a chance to resolve the blood pressure issue. What was the disqualifying BP ? Are you on medication now and still excessively high?
If so, you need to do some lifestyle modifications and take aggressive action to lower the blood pressure.
If you get caught driving without a medical card, you are in big trouble. Find another clinic - even though you are double paying, if they can give you a temp card it will be cheaper than the fines driving disqualified.
