scott has good advice right there, if you don't have any business background tread very carefully. Try to rat hole 20k at the minimum, after you put a down payment and all the other little costs you want at least 20k for unexpected stuff that will go wrong. Within that 1st yr id bet the house your going to be fixing stuff that the op didn't bother to cuz he wanted it gone.
My dad was owner op for 30yrs and back in 08 when fuel was sky high he had to throw in the towel, not just the fuel, he was also dabbling in blue stone and of couse that stopped selling when fuel went up. It can happen to anybody. Its nice to just slam the door and walk away. On your days off any probs with your rig comes before anything else. They don't call it a 5/2 schedule for nothing 5 days in it and 2 under it.
Start reading a lot, about everything related to the trucking industry and listen to what the old timers say.
Hey Old timers, All hope isn't lost yet for the next generation of drivers, Im real young, 22 and hardly a year of exp under me. I don't even look old enough to have my cdl let alone know what a b/c cummins is or a 2 stroke Detroit, So just remember, not all of us younger guys are steering wheel holders
Good luck to you man, don't be stupid with your $$$ and don't haul anything "just for fuel money" let it sit
About your loan issues do you have any equity to put up to get a cheaper monthly payment? If you have good credit most places should accept you with hardly any down. If its not too personal whats your fico score?
