Look on the engine block (drivers side) top of block by number 6 cylinder right below the head gasket, there should be a serial number stenciled in the block on a flat surface there.
If not, look behind the compressor at front left corner of the block right below the head gasket, serial number will be in one of those 2 places.
With that number you can call Cummins dealer and they will look it up for you….

Ok overhead is complete
Turns out I have a 1984 9670 with a 1979 ntc 350 bc in it, who knew lol.
No antifreeze or diesel in oil but it only ran 10 minutes with new oil in it.
Dropping the oil pan to inspect internals
Now. Anyone tell me if rocker box covers have a torque specification please?
Also motor still turns over great by starter but not by hand at all no idea why. -
OK, I need help started drop the oil pan took the oil line off the driver side and these two items came out. Any ideas?
Four more bolts to drop the pan I’ll keep you postedAttached Files:

CPL 160 is a small cam. Look at the block on the drivers side rear by the cam followers, it will be stamped BIG CAM clearly.
Binderdavemays1 Thanks this. -
Ok So I have a 350 small cam 1976 correct? What do you think those two little aluminum pieces are that’s the only thing I found in the line found nothing in the pan.

Oxbow and Binderdavemays1 Thank this.

Check the thrust on your crank. Take a bar and pry it front to back. Very little is ideal. Those sure look like thrust washers to me
Oxbow, Binderdavemays1 and Diesel Dave Thank this. -
Since You have the pan off, check the bearings. Replace if needed.
Oxbow and Binderdavemays1 Thank this. -
So the Pistons and the Sleeves look great. The cams look good crank everything looks good connecting rods so if there’s movement I need to drop the crank and put new bearings and spacers, correct?
-
What gets me is they were wedged in that oil tube if they came from the pan And they were wedged in that tube since the trucks an 84 and that motor went south. I wonder if these are remnants that they didn’t clean out when they put everything back on the older motor that they put in it is that a possibility?
If the crank doesn’t move back and forth, then I’m good?
I guess maybe the rest of the pieces could be on top because that’s all I found and would that stop it from turning over by hand with the accessory drive?Last edited: Nov 9, 2024
