Oh yeah, back on topic....OP, your jake brake should engage in any gear; if it doesn't, get it checked out before you do any more mountains....

Big Don and Lepton1 Thank this.

I'm preventing him from making a disastrous mistake on the road ,just because you have 4 years on the road and I have none does not make you know everything .

Do you really slam on the brakes repeatedly going down hill?A great way to lose your brakes....

Ha, I never knew going downhill was so complicated. So many variables!

hey. surprise surprise. I've found some steep ### hills that'll test the best of them. 7th gear will get you there.

This is where you need to develop "common sense" over "book sense".
Yes, ~some books call stab braking as full brake application to just at the point of wheel lockup (as in full emergency stops),, BUT in the common sense of the term (like Skate-Board said in this thread) stab braking on a downgrade means just stab your brakes firmly/briefly in order to reduce speed and then release. Instead of the more disastrous brake-fade prone method of holding constant pressure on your brakes going downhill.
If you ride the brakes like that, you'll smoke 'em, and won't have to worry about many more future downhills again.

    Lepton1 and Raiderfanatic Thank this.
