i blew an axle seal going down that 8% CO, cuz the jakes didn't work below 25 mph. yet, when i took it to kenworth, got told nothing wrong with jake,

only truck i've driven that was set up that way. personally, i like my jakes to work in all gears. not just the upper half of 5th gear on up.

Jakes can be set not to work at certain speeds. My Covenant Cascadia wouldn't engage the jakes when in low range, presumably to lessen wear (much higher torque on the drivetrain in low range)

That study was put aside when another study (by University of Michigan) showed snub braking to be far far superior when not all of the brakes were being applied evenly -- like in the real world where a light brake application might engage only the tractor relay valve (or only the trailer).

Snub braking uses higher brake pressures which ensures that all brakes are used, spreading the heat. The total amount of heat generated is the same -- the brakes are doing just as much work -- snub braking just has them do the same work in less time (more initial heat) with time to cool between applications...

For those of you who dont know, stab braking is applying your brakes all the way til the wheels lock up then releasing then reapplying. You meant to say controlled braking right? Controlled braking is what? Come on guys and gals, theres going to be a test. Some of you gotta go to your dmv and get a drivers handbook.

I had a guy tell me to apply the brakes smoothly and constant pressure all the way down the hill not letting the truck pick up speed. His theory was the brakes were heating up and every time you release the brake you were letting oxygen in therefor causing the brakes too become even hotter.

I personally when weather permitting use my jake and controlled braking when going down a steep grade. It does show you there is more than one way to skin a deer

I think whoever told you that hated you and wanted you to die. Please do not do what he suggested, you'll end up with no brakes. It is better to do it the way that you preferred.
