I'm sick of this garbage. But I can't just quit. At this point, I despise trucks, trailers, shippers, receivers, DOT, rest areas, truck stops, literally every person I meet. Every vehicle on the road. My company is excellent. My average length of hall is 2500 miles. I gross over 80k a year and they give me my way on everything without having to even make a fuss. I miss home. I hate living in a truck. I miss my daughter and wife. At times, I'd rather eat a bullet than drive one more mile. I constantly say I'm committing suicide one mile at a time. Going home more doesn't help. The paychecks are losing their luster. I've been at this krap for three years. I wasn't always this miserable. I have all the amenities in my truck. So, that can't be the problem. I run 4000+ miles a week. I get detention, layover, breakdown etc. Pretty much any valid reason for a driver to complain doesn't exist here. What is wrong with me? How can I make suffering through the next year a bit more bearable?
Help me survive another year OTR

Take a month off, unwind, enjoy what is most important to you... Family.
You are suffering from burn-out... Ive been there myself. Running those kind of miles takes a toll on a soul.Canadianhauler21, Speedy356, Trucker Paul and 20 others Thank this. -
I've tried that. I was off all of January and two weeks of February. I've probably been home a month total since February. I was home three total months last year if not more. I'm thinking this may be permanent.

Find a local gig. Be home daily. Screw that living in a truck crap

If this job is making you suicidal, why are you posting here? We are not Doctors or Psychiatrists, we are truck drivers. Please contact a mental health professional at once.

I switched from regional (home every weekend) to local about three weeks ago, and being home for dinner every night is pretty sweet. That makes up for the hit on my paycheck (local pays less) and lots more traffic (I drive around the DFW area). I miss going on down the road, and frankly I kinda miss my alone time, but reading Dr Suess every night to my five year old grandson more than makes up for it.Nashville, Trucker Carlton, Rocks and 9 others Thank this.

Didn't you hear? Dr Seuss was a racist pig! You can go to prison for that. Please burn all of those books immediately. You should know better. Shame on you.JoeyJunk, Vic Firth, Blue jeans and 7 others Thank this.

Every situation is different, I make more running local than I did running OTR, but yeah, I do miss the long runs, wide open roads. But, I love being home to see my kids grow up more.Blue jeans, Midwest Trucker, Coffey and 2 others Thank this.

OTR is definitely not for everyone!!! Sounds to me like you've had your fill of being OTR. So, look for a local gig. Sounds like you have enough experience for that to not be a problem.
I've been OTR a year and a half. I have a love/hate relationship with it, but addicted to it at the same time and I don't think I could quit and pretty sure I'd be miserable with a local gig myself.
I'm a West Coast reefer jockey. The landscape in the West is just incredible. Traveling around in it will be hard to give up someday. I love to drive and travel and yet to tire of either one. I don't know if I'll ever get tired of either. Living in a truck has its pros and cons. Biggest downside is not being home very often and I hate that part of it. But love the other demonstrably more.
However, without a doubt this is only a life for some. Lots of folks just won't be happy with it. Absolutely nothing wrong with that. Most truckers kinda start out OTR because that seems to be the hardest niche to keep drivers. But, most don't stay there. Some of us though, find it is where we do fit best.
Do yourself a favor, quit being miseable. Life's too short and precious. Find a local gig where you can be close to your loved ones. My opinion at least!Rocks, Blue jeans, meechyaboy and 2 others Thank this. -
That's the plan in a year or so. I have to move from home. 0 local opportunities or any local opportunities in any field unless you want to do call center or flip burgers. Trying to move debt free. I'm going to have to tough it out one more year or sell all my junk. Which is becoming an easier decision.Mototom Thanks this.
