I got a call from a broker who frequently posts on Truckstop. I checked his credit and it says his Authority was granted 8/31/21.....but, it says his surety bond was in effect 9/14/20. However, his broker authority says its revoked....... I use RTS for credit checks....
Help me understand this....

Did You confirm on Safer that data is right ?
nikmirbre Thanks this. -

Not to de-rail this thread but, how much of a difference is your insurance costing as a full independent versus where you were leased onto? Just curious...4mer trucker and nikmirbre Thank this.
-
It was kinda confusing for me insurance wise because I thought the majority of the cost of insurance would be cargo and liability. My insurance where I was leased to was roughly 6k a year(thats for truck insurance) and now on my own for truck insurance only I pay roughly 12k per year(my equipment is about $180,000) and about $3000(if that) for cargo and general liability.

I would not run for a broker that new unless the stars lined up in a BIG way. Basically, I'm saying i wouldn't run for a broker that new. Just too risky when there are so many others out there with some skin in the game.
They might be solid, they might be great, but this business is too risky already for me to take that chance personally.D.Tibbitt, LoneRanger, ProfessionalNoticer and 2 others Thank this. -
Which brings up another point...... A similar broker had a MC number 093xxx, definitely not a new broker and have been around quite a long time. But when I check on them, the authority was granted about a year ago.86scotty Thanks this. -
FMCSA will re-use numbers that have been out a long time.markk, 86scotty, ProfessionalNoticer and 3 others Thank this.

This. Alternatively, it is sometimes possible that they have a brief lap on their authority due to an administrative error. You can look on carrier411 and see how long the MC had an authority lapse and if contact information changed.

If they pay me half up front and half at the drop I'll work with them otherwise forget it. Same goes for those with bad credit. Oh, and intrastate moves. No matter what intrastate moves must be paid upfront too since bonds don't cover those.
