I would like to think this is probably isolated to the vendor, I feel that to fill the order they falsified the number. If you are in doubt pull the cover off the rear of the head. Number is on the rear journal. But keep in mind the new cam was billed under a different number than what it was stamped with. The new cam was new but had a reman number.

I'm glad you found it. Now somebody needs to figure out how to back charge the vendor for the labor and truck down time if they indeed changed the part number on the camshaft to get it out of their inventory

Did you get that camshaft from a CAT house or a regular truck supply store ? Glad to hear you found the problem.

What was the part number on the camshaft? Cat will cross out the new number on the box and write the reman part number on with a black marker to fill the order if no reman camshafts are in stock. You get a brand new camshaft for the price of reman. This is normal procedure.

The number on the cam had been ground off and restamped. The cam came from a dealer that buys from cummins and cat , I was told the cam came from the Morton wharehouse. I do know about the reman number on new parts . I think it would be hard to reman a cam unless the damage was limited to imprefections in the finish. I think that they looked up the lift specs and found most have the same lift and assumed they are all the same without thought to lobe seperation and and different advance specs. I firmly believe this was done inhouse and not the fault of cat. Now I need to confront the supplier about this and see what can be done. The sad part is I know a lot of other shops that use them for parts and I wonder if this has happened before.
