So many answers. my my. OP go look inside the drivers door. If the GVRW is 26,001 pounds or over you will need a Class B CDL to operate it. If said vehicle is under 26.001 but over 10,001 and you plan to operate it outside the 100 air miles exception YOU MUST LOG. FMCSA rules in 390.5 clearly defines commercial vehicles as a vehicle over 10.001 pounds. FMCSA 395 clearly states ALL PROPERTY CARRYING COMMERCIAL VEHICLES NOT CDL VEHICLES . If you operate ANY SIZE OR CLASS VEHICLE WITH PLACARDS YOU MUST HAVE AT LEAST A CLASS C CDL WITH HAZMAT ON IT.

Edited to add. The medical card requirements are any vehicle OVER 10,001 NOT 26.001. People need to understand that 26,001 pound thing is for CDLs. A commercial vehicle has a different definition.

One further thing on the air brakes. It is my belief air brakes is tied to the CDL not the size vehicle. In the last 20 or so years answers to this question has been all over the place.

Don't forget that the log book requirements and the medical card requirements are only for drivers engaged in interstate driving
Stay in state and the rules are whatever the state says they are.
