:smt028Give me your top picks for someone to get started in the business today. I have CDL from recent graduation, just no recent experience. Drove for Overnite many moons ago. Looking for a ride again but want lots of home time too. :biggrin_1square11:

OMG! you just named the other words that no one should ever work for. Flatbed, Arrow has made big strides lately. Reefer; I have to so Prime or Central. Dry is up in the air. Do your homework, never jump because someone tickled your ear. And never ever ever pay fora ticket without a lawyer handling the situation for you, EVER. I have nothing on my record bu it is not because I did not receive a ticket, it is because I always used a lawyer who got my record cleaned each and every time:biggrin_25519:

Don't sweat all that stuff over CR England. If they turned you down, they'd be doing YOU a favor. I survived Schneider back in 04, but a lot has changed with them. If you want to drive, and need to get ur cdl, just go to a community college that has driver training, and get it that way, then look for a company to get experience with. It can be done. I met a former England driver at a consignee once who told me she'd been with them for over three months and never received any pay!! She'd been talked into their fleece agreement, fresh out of training, and that was what she got for it. Of course she went elsewhere. Can't say I blame her.

CRE must have a way with conning people into those agreements. It makes no sense at all. In my opinion--its cheaper to get your own cdl and less of a hassle as well. These company's get away with way too much garbage. :biggrin_25513:

Just to get back on subject I would suggest that any time you have to do business that can be detrimental to your career you need to document everything. Paying by credit card was great but you have to do more. When sending the money order you can send it where you get a signature at the other end. Keep a small book ( we used to call them wheel books in the service) and ask who you are talking to, get there name even if they can only give their first name. Keep track of the date and time and what was briefly discussed.

Over the years I've got notes and folders on all kinds subjects and it was a hard habit for me to get into but saved my a__ many times when the government worker states they have no idea what you're talking about. They really change their tune when you say well back on Jan 15, 2007 at 2:pm you told me to do just the opposite of what you're saying now!!! That's happened to me more than once.

    And most important FOLLOW UP.

I think they tell these folks all these stories about how much more they can make if they lease the truck, but don't bother to fill in the rest of the blanks. Newbies usually won't think to ask a lot of important questions til it's too late. I'm now in my 4th year of driving, and though it's a nice idea to own one's own truck, I just think driving one as a company driver is ENOUGH responsibility for me. I don't want all that extra baggage.:biggrin_255:

I so agree with you. I dont think I wanna worry from week to week if i am gonna make enough to cover the truck payment! :biggrin_25513: I don't think I would be able to plan to be home on the weekends if I had my own truck either! :biggrin_2552:
