Besides the Ping match regards emission vs glider (which has been totally beat to death), I think you are on the right path.
The dealer I got my Star from (The Truck Shop, AUburn,Wa) also have an oil company, and spec'd a Star to do their deliveries. 105,500lbs pretty much all the time. The truck has an 18, DD16 and 3.90 rears. It only runs mountains, thus the gearing. Doug said they are getting over 6mpg loaded though, which is excellent IMHO.
Give them a shout, and ask for Doug there. With them running their own trucks also, he has a very good idea on what works and what doesn't. He also dries too, so can sympathize with a bad truck etc.
Martincnsper Thanks this. -
Fitzgerald glider's seem to be the best bang for the buck if you're going new. They replace some OEM parts for higher quality aftermarket parts on a rebuild. On average it's only about a $25K price difference between a brand new factory stock truck and a glider. Seems with Freightliners piss poor customer service, Fitzgerald would go that extra mile for the O/O. I don't know this personally but that's the impression I have gotten from them. I'm seriously considering a glider myself in a couple years once I get rid of what I have now unless something brings me to do so sooner.

Yeah but that 12.7 only puts out 1650 torque so that is too small for what I will be pulling 105,500 up to 136,000 in the rockies. I would need a tow truck or a tail wind to get up the passes.

18 d/o tall rubber 3.70 or 3.55 classic hood and you should consider a cummins
-
I have considered a Cummins. All the mechanics that I have talked (6) to warn me to stay away from them. Besides issues with the EGR cooler leaks they have told me that there are issues with the high pressure fuel pumps also. Each and every one of them tell me that Detroit is the way to go as far as maintenance costs and parts availability. For instance a cat turbo would run around 4k where a detroit would be around 2500. I guess they forgot that was yellow paint and not gold.
Now I have heard from some drivers that love their cummins but they have all been company drivers. The cummins is also heavier than the detroit. -
I would go with a big hood Star hands down. 3.70 or 3.55 rears there really isn't enough difference to write home about. 3 mph on 11R24.5 rubber. If new i would have say Detroit, but if glider CAT all the way. Not that my opinion matters but now you have it lol.

It does matter and I thank all those that took the time to post.
Yeah with the glider it would have been a cat but the cost would have been an additional 20k so that would put it at 139k for the truck.wore out Thanks this. -
Crazy what they have come to.

I wouldn't touch a Fitz glider with a Detroit. I have seen inside those "rebuilt" motors two times now...They use aftermarket parts, not Detroit parts.
IMHO, a DD is THE way to go right now, as far as motors go. I know guys with the ISX's, and they are having more issues than the guys with DD15's and 16's
